About the Study

The ZOE BIOME research project involved 399 adults in good health between the ages of 35 and 65. These individuals typically consumed under 20 grams of fiber each day, a level that aligns with average intake patterns observed across the United Kingdom and the United States.

Study Design and Participant Experience

Over a period of six weeks, those taking part were placed into one of three categories at random. One group received a comprehensive whole-food plant mixture containing over 30 distinct components providing 30 grams daily. Another group took a probiotic supplement featuring Lactobacillus rhamnosus at a dose of 15 billion colony-forming units per day. The third group consumed bread croutons serving as the control option.

The plant mixture incorporated a broad selection of items from fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, herbs, nuts, seeds, spices, and whole grains. These were selected specifically due to their contributions in terms of fiber content, polyphenols known for antioxidant effects, and various micronutrients.

Individuals incorporated the mixture into their usual meals without making other dietary alterations, and compliance rates exceeded 98 percent across every group involved.

Significant Shifts in Gut Bacteria

The primary outcome centered on changes within the gut microbiome. Those using the plant blend experienced alterations in the relative abundance of 57 different bacterial species over the six-week timeframe. In comparison, the control group saw changes in 14 species, while the probiotic group noted shifts in only four species.

Among participants receiving the blend, the bacteria that grew in presence generally showed stronger connections to positive health outcomes, whereas those that declined were more often linked to less beneficial associations. Although the results did not reach full statistical significance, the practical improvements reported by participants appeared meaningful.

In addition to microbiome adjustments, individuals in the blend group experienced reductions in various digestive complaints such as indigestion, constipation, heartburn, and flatulence. They also noted increased energy levels and improved overall mood when contrasted with the control participants.

Markers in the blood including cholesterol levels, blood sugar regulation, and inflammation showed no substantial alterations. Researchers anticipated this outcome since the adults involved were already healthy and lacked preexisting cardiometabolic concerns.

The study approach emphasized practicality by encouraging additions to existing meals instead of requiring complete dietary overhauls. This perspective offers helpful guidance for applying the insights in everyday routines.
